#Thrawn In #StarWars

It has been a tumultuous ~2 years for the #GetThrawnIn #StarWarsRebels campaign. We had many attacks by angry fans who felt they must control the creative concepts of Lucasfilm. Their process attacks them online through cyberharassment and bullying, as recent as Star Wars Celebration Europe toward a famous author (source).

We started out for social justice, but we learned about fine art and classical music.

We have over 90 images from Jackson Pollock’s string paintings to the recent Maria Kreyn’s “Alone Together” painting used in ABC’s “To Catch A Thief”.

We have built a 62 youtube playlist from classical music composers and artists that highlight story motifs that highlight essential part from all the Star Wars movies. Composers like Stravinsky and Holst. However, we have learned to love classics from Gustav Mahler and Rachmaninov.

The art and music components were for exposure to ask the question, what types of art and music would the character Thrawn see and hear to evaluate a culture. Based on our reading of both Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire and Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath, we discover that Thrawn chose a variety of art pieces to evaluation, most were holographic scupltures. But he had a fine appreciation for color that only 2-D paintings provide. As far as the music, he enjoy symphonies and orchestras. Strings instruments were fine, but it is never stated that within the movements of work he heard, what kind of instruments he had an affinity toward.

As far as interpretation of each piece, we did not make any. We wanted our audience to do it. Then, we discover they were woefully ignorant of fine art and classical music. Why choose those colors? Why that montage of sound? That is when we learned that Thrawn probably has synesthesia – he can see color in sound and numbers to music. He has a collection of senses that amplify when he interacts with art and music. It might be an activity of the Chiss, then again, it may just be a character trait of Thrawn and he applies his abilities with his war training and tactical strategy.

We also have an Arts and Crafts component with what we call, “Save The Ysalamiri“. These Star Wars Legends’ canon creatures, Ysalamiri, form Force Neutral bubbles in 10 meters in diameter that can stop Force Users from using their Force powers. These creatures, Ysalamiri, appear like pets of a cat-dog-iguana appearance and only lived on one planet, on an “endangered” tree. In Heir to the Empire, Thrawn discovered a way to remove Ysalamiri from their trees without killing them and use them to his advantage. In real life, we created sock puppets for family enjoyment.
